pretty sure wu dong qian kun is well known enough also i highly rate xing chen bian one of the first i watched and its my top 3 to the day

Dase • 1 year ago

I mean the leaving part :P

OfficialDrixMalone • 1 year ago

Wow, so the Yellow Maple Sect will really fall?!

And I was 60/40 on the YMS being decimated or winning, but damn the writer actually made it an unfavorable outcome, kind of still was shocked. Though I do like the realism of not everything working out and this made it more entertaining. Impressed the author took it there, not many would, which is why he's such a ingenious writer.

Dase • 1 year ago

I wouldnt say the Yellow Maple Sect failed, more like the higher ups failed the sect and the low level cultivators.

I know you dont like to read spoilers but the following is "safe" The Yellow Maple sect does survive and so does some pockets of low level cultivators, they tried to revive it and after many years later they tried to get Han Li to return and become an elder, he refused, they then asked if he could protect the sect, since it was severely weakened. I think Han Li promises to help them when they are in trouble three times out of old times sake, I cant remember exactly since it's been a while I read the novel, but I kind of remembered that he wasnt really heartless

Umm the author isnt that fantastic... lol, in terms of novel output Soul Land's author is one of the few that writes a lot, though he has slowed down in recent years, but he used to hold the top sales and top number of novel being written, he even made it to the world's record

Fanren's author follows the old classical Wuxia style novelists of the 1930s-1960s in my own opinion, some people might disagree. What I mean is that he doesnt wow us with the special techniques, magical weapons, tonnes of explicit sexual encounters or even handsome main character that powers up quickly and is unbeatable, his novel is mostly story driven

Pha Yang • 1 year ago

Don't even get started on TJSS. That writer fills up his novels with high hopes and long introductions and character build up. Then he fills the whole novel with auctions, purple eyes cultivation/tang hammer technique, and acts like every soul land grass roots still matters. Then he smashed the whole novel with god inheritance, divine weapons, bloodlines powers, dragon god things, and a new planet that really doesn't matter. Then the novel will come to an abrupt end, just so TJSS can start a new novel. Here's summary and correct me if I'm wrong. Douluo Dalu 1, it's the original story but "to be continued". DD2: unrivalled tang sect, it's huo yuhao story but wait it doesn't matter cause it's still Tangsan story. DD3: something something dragon king, it's about a youth with dual souls with blue silver grass but wait it's Tangsan son but the author wife passed away so.. To be continued. DD4: the crossdresser grandson "supposed to be the final one". Lan xuanyu the crossdresser who pretends to a maiden so he can go cultivate on a higher level world. Not it matters because dragon god comes back and everything else doesn't matter.

Dase • 1 year ago

I dont disagree with you about TJSS, DD1 was abruptly cut short, I felt it was "to be continued" as well, the last arc was rushed and ideas and the plot twist (hint hint Bibi Dong finale) was like HUH?

I never said TJSS was a fantastic writer, I just presented the fact that he is a popular author and made the top sales for a number of years, my opinion still stands, I prefer Heavenly Silkworm Potato over him, although I do prefer him over Chen Dong LOL

This is why the only novel I ever finished from TJSS is DD1, I read a few chapters of DD2 and said nope, new MC new story, not Tang San, not continuation, byebye. I had a feeling he went to far in writing himself and his wife into the novel, and saw what was on the forums and internet, and said to myself yup, I knew it, while I understand it is a coping mechanism for his wife's death and is a small part of his other novels, I just felt it shouldnt be put into a novel, write another autobiography for goodness sake, write about prevention or at least how to deal with the same illness as his wife, be proactive in helping others with the same illness, but some people love his writing, I am one of the few that gave up after DD1

Youtube Addict • 1 year ago

Did you just take the words right out of my mouth? LOL!!

I may seem rather crude whenever I talk about XW. But it’s really not about her but rather that TJSS repeatedly exploits his wife’s condition and by doing so, he ruined a good female character that could have been TS’s equal. Don’t get me wrong, I was really moved by their love story but the more I read about him and his writings, the more I feel that there’s no smoke without fire (with all the rumours and gossips).

Although I sympathise him (and his late wife), I’m really not keen on reading a sickly XW in every sequel. There’s only so much of sympathy one can suck before it becomes an exploitation. Instead of writing about every single effort he made for his wife, it would have been so much more admirable and honourable if he could use his popularity to raise awareness or even start a cancer trust.

I still think you made a superb decision on not continuing with the sequels. TS is one of my fav Chinese MCs of all time. I like everything about him, even his mad love for XW and when DD ended so abruptly, I started reading DD2 hoping to find a closure to TS’s story but unfortunately it left me more disappointed than ever. DD5 will be my last TJSS novel. Even Throne of Seal does not have enough pulling factor for me. There are many other noteworthy works from other authors that deserve my attention. I will try your Heavenly Silkworm Potato next although my fav wuxia novels are the classics from Jin Yong. Unfortunately not all of them are translated. Do tell me what’s your fav from Jin Yong.

Dase • 1 year ago

lol we tend to think alike. Yeah... let's not talk about DD2, I am someone who immerses myself into the story, so when the main character is abused like that, I dont feel too good

My Jing Yong's favourite is probably the Deer and the Cauldron, most people would go for the Condor Heroes or Return of the Condor Heroes lol. (the Deer and Cauldron is a harem novel lol) It could be because I watched Tony Leung (he acted as Shang Chi's father) as the main character, the series is on youtube under the name The Duke of Mount Deer, in the TVB channel, although it is very old mid 1980s

Heavenly Silkworm Potato is the author of Doupo Cangqiong (Battle through the Heavens), Wudong Qiankun (Martial Universe) Da Zhu Zai (The Great Ruler) and Dragon Prince Yuan, the first three are already made into donghua, Da Zhu Zai will be made into 3d, not sure if it is the second season or a remake of the 2d first season, and Dragon Prince Yuan is currently in development, all of them have been made into live action drama (although I am not sure about Dragon Prince Yuan) and two of them are going to have their second season released later on. I enjoy reading his novels, it isnt as dark as other novels, granted HSP has his faults, he sometimes forgets about plot devices he made in earlier chapters as well as characters as the story progresses, and then when he realises he tries to put them back into the novel lol, half the fun is trying to find them, but all significant love interests stays relevant, and isnt ditched as the story progresses "Oh wife got kidnapped, half a book later main character finds her after marrying several women" yeah looking at you Wu Shang Shen Di!

Back to TJSS, Soul Land second season live action will be out as well, though critics have panned it as crap, I watched the first episode and vomited....

Not sure if you like manhuas, but you can try Ma Wingshing's (he was one of Hong Kong's most prolific manhua artist) manhua Fengyun (Stormriders) I hope one day it be animated into a 3d series or at least a 3d, they did a short OVA but that is it, the manhua it is pretty good, the movies based on it is good as well but they changed things around

There is an unofficial translated up to volume 3 on the net under either Stormrider or Fungwan but I think they stopped cause there is an official translated one out there

Youtube Addict • 1 year ago

I’m not so much into manhuas, it was more mangas for me but that craze was soon replaced by animes.

When I was working in Asia in the early 2000s (ahem.. yes I’m that old), my Chinese colleagues introduced me to a whole new world of Chinese wuxia novels and films. Before that, all I know was Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and the likes but then they loaned me all their DVD collections and boy, it just blew me away. Yes, I love John Woo and Tsui Hark’s works. Never thought I would be fascinated by flying men in costumes. It was then that I started reading Chinese wuxia novels but was rather limited due to the lack of translations. Thank God for Google Translate!

As for my fav Jin Yong’s, it’s actually Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils. I find it hilarious and entertaining. That’s probably one of the very few Chinese novels with multiple MCs that I really enjoy. Of course the Condor Heroes Trilogy wasn’t bad as well. I’ve not read the one that you mentioned. I think I might just give it a try. 😉

P.S. Are you sure Douluo Continent 2 drama is coming soon? Has Tencent announced it? I didn't think they would still go for S2 after the failure of the first one. The scriptwriter Wang Juan was literally hounded by critics and he totally deserves it. I had so much fun reading all the critiques on MDL and Weibo. You can ask douluo, we (the critics) even had to move our discussion to a different thread because apparently we were being overly critical. I shan't start another discussion here, lest I'd be kicked out and banned by disqus. 😜

Dase • 1 year ago

ahh looks like you are right, there's no word on DC2 now, they had the main actor from DC1 signed up but I guess it is all in the wind now given the amount of bad ratings lol, rumor has it that they will skip to DC3, Soul Land 2 that is *shake my head*

Demi God and Semi Demon is a good series as well, three main characters, each one with different love types of love interest. Wife dies, sister in love with him, monk marries a princess, and of course the harem lol

Pha Yang • 1 year ago

Try the writer "eagle eating chicken" all of his writings are solid works. Tribulation of myriad clan and number one martial artists.

Also, I recommend "I become rich second generation of villain" just for fun.

Pha Yang • 1 year ago

Honestly, I prefer DD2 over all of the tang family series. I felt that DD2 best represents how the soul land world should be and appreciate huo yuhao struggles. The struggle of advancing technology and having to deal with the same problems as the original soul land. Of course it was ruined by tang San.

Dase • 1 year ago

Your taste is different from mine lol I havent finished DD2, I studied English literature when I was
a at high school, I analyse and critique paragraphs without purposely doing it as a habit, having being drilled into doing it when I was in high school and also going
through lot's of Greek tragedy drama and Shakespeare's plays, Wuthering Heights, Great Gatsby. So I can only take so much reading the MC struggling and unhappy endings, but it is a personal preference, I just dont like those kind of endings

Soul Land is not as good as Fanren. TJSS makes up for it by mass production. It's a borderline quality vs quantity. Though Fanren's author did admitted that he is not good at writing Romance.

Which people took context for their own agenda to shit on him. Honestly, it was more like he doesn't focus on romance that much.

Take Chen Qiaoqian in last episode.
She yearns freedom. To be free of the shackles of her responsibility as a Powerful Cultivator Family woman. Han Li is the free love she found. But she also knows that it is impossible between them. So last episode's meeting by her mother's favorite field of flowers, a place that her mother is truly free to be her mother. The only place where she can find solace, to say (scream in pits of despair) everything bottomed up in her heart, knowing that Han Li is not able to give her what she desires, in order to bid him goodbye properly, to let him go. Respect his wishes.

Nangong Wan - Underneath that impish/mischevious fairy like appearance shares similar despair. She is born with excellent Spirit Roots and Wisdom Roots (not as strong as Han Li) which they do not know, lower realm, lower levels are not able to discern it. They just find her OMFG SHE SO GOD DAMNED TALENTED! HER CULTIVATION ADVANCE AT ASTOUNDING RATE! so she is shackled, not by a family, but Sect and multiple powerful Cultivation Families, all wants her and she's hard pressed fighting off the gangbanging by HUNDREDS of people because they want her for her potential.

Someone else whose name I will not mention: She is more lucky than Chen Qiaoqian. She didn't fall in love until Core Formation is within reach. Plus... Han Li was already a Nascent Soul when he met her and through his help, she would reach Core Formation. Due to difference in circumstances, mostly because Han Li is Nascent Soul. When she says she's Han Li's concubine/mistress/lover... even if she sees she's the Nascent Soul's C*m D*mp, nobody will dare to say anything. Just look at how the 'MIGHTY CULTIVATOR ARISTOCRAT FAMILIES' and the Sects that are more powerful than the pathetic excuse you see in the Seven 'Great ' Sects shut the f**k up and quietly backs off when they see it is Han Li.

Remember:
All beneath Nascent Souls are insignificant ants
All beneath nascent souls are insignficant ants
All beneath nascent souls are insignificant ants
It's important so I say three times.
As you can see in this episode, they have abilities similar to Time Stop you see from D&D's Level 9 Spell or Overlord Ainz's Time Stop ability and they don't need to prepare a spell. This is like a regular punch for them.

Dase • 1 year ago

It's all boils down to personal perferences, what someone likes or
dislike could be the opposite to anothers. Not being good at writing romance doesnt meaan it is bad, there are some novelists who refuses to write any such as HuDieLan who wrote QuanZhiGaoShou (King's Avatar) yet they are successful in presenting his story, others might have a harem with lot's of romances like Momo who wrote WuLianDianFeng (Martial Peak) or JingWuHen who wrote JueShiWuShen (Peerless Martial God not the trash Peerless Martial Spirit), the romances ends up being just fluff with no real reason why the main character have multiple women in his life, it ends up being, so much for being loyal to your first wife, and when your wife is missing you go and find another one, then another, and each woman becomes forgotten as the story progresses until the author decides to bring them back so they stay relevant.

Getting back to Fanren vs Soul Land, again it is a matter of preferences, the novel for Fanren is boring. I had to skip chapters the first time I read it, too much dribble and fluff, while Soul Land I enjoyed it. Both have their flaws and good points, but one is like a boring Golden Globe award movie the other is a top blockbuster movie at the cinema. Yes some people dont find it boring again it is a matter of taste, if I have to read Jing Yong or Gu Long's novel now and compared them with the new wave of authors, I will find them more interesting than some of them lol again it is a matter of taste.

Pha Yang • 1 year ago

I have to disagree with you on that idea, sister dase. I just started reading fanren and found it to be well written. Is it boring? Now that is preferences but comparing the novel with donghua gave me even more appreciation to the novel. Example, how the mo family was destroyed I would love to see the donghua showing how power hungry the mo family was.

Soul land (douluo Dalu) ie DD on the other hand is like a rebranded iphone. Every DD is a complete rebranding of the previous DD with 1k years break in between. And yes... It'll never end because I felt that tjss will just end the novel and start a new one based on the past novel. Then why stop it in the first place?

Dase • 1 year ago

Again it is a matter of preferences, I agree Fanren is well written, but it is boring compared with Soul Land, unless you find Soul Land more boring than Fanren then we are back to a matter of preferences lol

Well, you and I know that novels are more detailed and can explain much more than donghua, which is why I like to read novels and then watch the donghua

Again I refer back to what I wrote, Soul Land is like a box office movie where it will spin out more sequels like Mission Impossible, Die Hard movies, doesnt mean they are written well, just popular while Fanren is more like Schindler's List, Gladiator, award winning movies

Pha Yang • 1 year ago

Correct, it's a rebranded iphone but people still buy iPhone

Winteriscoming • 1 year ago

Jin Yong and Gu Long are considered Titans, legends of Chinese Novel writers, even though due to the change in era, their idealogy may seem outdated or outright misogynistic (They have passed away and cannot write novels with 'updates') but their stories are always much more well written than TJSS, Butterfly Blue, Momo, Jingwuhen etc. In terms of writing, Fanren and Soul Land cannot compare to them. Even though Fanren is better written than SL, if not a little boring to some people: Example you.

Winteriscoming • 1 year ago

Han Li is not the only one. There were some, in fact, some of them just left on their flying swords when the Nascent Soul Great Grand Elder told them he will not fight for them.

Han Li is one step slow and couldn't get away. Then again, if the Nascent Soul were to order those who flew away to come back, chances is they can't escape either.

The Brother Song and Wei Niang did mention that they lost because two of their allied sects suddenly turned on them amidst the battle. The start of the episode is the aftermath. There is really no contest. The 6 demonic sects are stronger than 7 Great Sects. Then you have 2 of the 7 turned against them. It's 6 collectively stronger + 2 sneak attack for 10x damage on 5 Great Sects.
